Choosing a Dentist

How often do you go to the dentist? If you answered "never" because you don’t have one, you have come to the right place.

Picking a dentist is a very personal decision. The first step is to define your expectations by asking yourself “What do I want from my dentist?”

The second step is to make a list of potential dentists. Start by asking your friends and family for a referral.

Once you have a good list, you can use the following checklist to help determine which dentist is right for you.

  • Is the location convenient to your home or work?
  • Is the dentist covered under your insurance plan?
  • Is it a family care or adult care dental practice?
  • Do the hours and days work with your schedule? (Note: ImmediaDent is open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. seven days a week.)
  • Is emergency care available?

After you have selected a potential dentist, set up a “get-to-know-you” interview with the dentist and his or her staff. During the interview don’t be afraid to ask a lot of questions, for example:

  • What technologies does the dentist use?
  • Does the dentist have a specialty?
  • Does the dentist have experience with children (if applicable)?
  • Is the dentist certified for specific procedures (e.g., cosmetics, oral surgery, root canals)?

Once you have successfully selected a dentist, you should visit him or her twice a year for a checkup and cleaning. You and your dentist are a team when it comes to maintaining the health of your teeth and gums.
